I discovered The Criterion Collection in high school and it allowed me to watch some of the best movies ever made from around the world, carefully curated and presented with beautiful box art. It opened my eyes to the possibilities of what cinema could be and made hundreds of cinematic masterpieces accessible to movie nerds like me.

I was on the verge of quitting the movie biz in 2015 - I was broke, exhausted, and felt out of place and unappreciated on a lot of projects I had worked on since graduating. I decided to take “one last job” as a night watchman on a little movie that eventually became The Alchemist Cookbook. Joel Potrykus, Ashley Potrykus, Adam J. Minnick, Brandon Bowman, Kevin Clancy, Saša Šlogar, Mike Saunders, and Joshua Burge immediately made me feel welcome. They accepted me for who I am, recognized my passion for making movies, and told me that I was part of their band, Sob Noisse. I was promoted from night watchman to Key Production Assistant and we made a cool, weird, creepy movie in the West Michigan woods.

After the premiere of The Alchemist Cookbook at SXSW in 2016, I thanked Joel for “letting me feel like I belong here.” He replied “You DO belong here.” Later that year, Joel asked me if I wanted to be his Assistant Director on his next movie. I had never assistant directed a feature film before, but if Joel and Sob Noisse trusted me, I knew I was up to the task. To this day, RELAXER is my favorite set I’ve had the pleasure of working on! It changed the way I looked at making movies and showed me what true collaboration and camaraderie on set looks like.

On May 1st, all of the Sob Noisse feature films, APE, BUZZARD, THE ALCHEMIST COOKBOOK, and RELAXER, plus Joel’s new short film THING FROM THE FACTORY BY THE FIELD will be streaming on The Criterion Channel! I used to only dream about being part of such a prestigious collection of movies, but now I’m living it. Thank you Sob Noisse, Oscilloscope Laboratories, and The Criterion Collection! Sob Noisse 4 ever!
